Records, 1834-1998, of the LeSueur-Richmond Slate Corporation.

Historical and administrative materials relating to LeSueur-Richmond Slate Corporation, which operates slate quarries and produces slate and rock-based products in and around Arvonia, Virginia. This company evolved from numerous other slate companies that operated comtemporaneously over approximately 160 years and were gradually merged into or acquired by LeSueur-Richmond. Collection includes a stock certificate book, 1868-1870 and 1913, of the oldest predecessor company, Old Dominion Slate and Mining Company of New York, which undertook slate quarrying operations after the Civil War in in Fluvanna County, Va. Also, includes financial record books and loose papers of Monticello Slate Company, founded by James Turner Sloan and Owen R. Jeffrey in 1925, which conducted mining and production operations in Albemarle County, Va., until 1960. Also, includes minute books, financial and other record volumes, and loose papers of Williams Slate Company, Inc., founded by brothers Evan R. Williams and John R. Williams and later headed by Walter A. Chambers, including acquisition records relating to the Nicholas Quarry and other tracts in Buckingham County, Va., records of the predecessor firm of J. R. Williams & Co., and and records, 1922-1926, of Williams-Arvonia Slate Corporation, which acted as sales agent for Williams Slate and the Arvonia-Buckingham Slate Company, Inc., which operated quarries on adjacent tracts. Also, includes a ledger, 1913-1931, of the short-lived Buckingham Slate Quarries Corporation, which was quickly acquired by Arvonia-Buckingham Slate Company, Inc. The largest group of records consists of financial and related record books and loose papers of Arvonia-Buckingham Slate Company, Inc., at one time the largest quarry operator in Buckingham County, whose officers included at various points James Turner Sloan, Thomas Aubrey Yancey, Robert G. Cabell III, Owen R. Jeffrey, Charles E. Wingo III, and James Read Branch (some records concern labor relations in 1947-1949, after union organization of quarry and production workers). Arvonia-Buckingham was dissolved in 1985 and its assets ultimately acquired by LeSueur-Richmond. Also, includes a few loose papers, a minute book, and financial record books of Buckingham Slate Products Company, Inc., which was formed in 1956 to mine slate and produce slate products but only operated until 1965. A larger group of records, including minute books, financial record books, and a significant group of loose papers (a large measure of which consist of project files, product photographs, and advertising materials), were generated by Buckingham-Virginia Slate Corporation, which was founded in 1929 to serve as the marketing and sales arm of Williams Slate, Arvonia-Buckingham and LeSueur-Richmond. Lastly, the collection includes financial record books and some loose papers (primarily corporate tax files) of LeSueur-Richmond Slate Corporation, founded in 1924 through the merger of LeSueur Slate Quarries Company and Richmond Slate Company. The company continues in operation and has now also expanded more generally into the rock and stone products mining and production fields.
